I’d thought so much about the hospital’s potential financial support for the resort that I’d almost forgotten about Kevin. Did anyone really think his presence on Sandra’s porch meant that he’d killed her?

CHAPTER ELEVEN

I KNOW SOME PEOPLE who go to visitations and funerals almost as a social event. I hate both. Fortunately, Sandra's nephew chose to have people visit at First Prez before the funeral rather than the night before.

The parking lot overflowed. I dropped off Aunt Madge and Harry and parked a block and a half from the red brick church. As I walked back I took in its traditional white steeple and wondered if a developer would someday want the property. I remembered Reverend Jamison once telling me the congregation had an offer to buy the site. They turned it down.

Norman Cartwright and his wife Annette seemed like solemn folks, even considering their reason for being in town. When Madge, Harry, and I made it through the line to them, I felt as if I was shaking hands with store mannequins. Very tall and proper.

Though Norman did not signal a need for familiarity, Aunt Madge hugged him as she introduced herself. "Sandra Cartwright was a delightful person. I'm sorry you won't have her anymore."

"Ah. She mentioned you and your campaign." He smiled slightly. "She seemed to think you would be Ocean Alley's Savior Mayor."

Harry put a fist over his mouth as he cleared his throat, but I knew he was hiding a smile. I didn't meet his eyes.

"Goodness," Aunt Madge said, "I'll have to work even harder."

Norman and Annette sat in the front row by themselves, which seemed lonely to me. The second row looked like a military line-up of hospital senior staff, with Quentin Wharton seated by the aisle. All men, except the director of human resources, and all in black.

Sandra was to be cremated, but I didn't see an urn anywhere. Maybe the medical examiner hadn't even released her body. Ugh.

Reverend Jamison had a lot of good things to say about Sandra, many of which I didn't know. He thought about half the nurses at the hospital had met her via career days at various high schools, and come to Ocean Alley Hospital because of her. "Filling her shoes may be possible, but it's hard to imagine anyone as dedicated as the hospital's late director of nursing."

As the service ended, I noted Sergeant Morehouse in a back pew. He had on a suit rather than his more casual detective clothes. He also wore no badge. I figured he was on his own time. Or checking out people and not wanting to look obvious. When others began to walk down the steps to the community room for lunch, I walked back to Morehouse.

I sat next to him. “Nice to see you.”

“She was good to Kevin.”

I nodded. “Do you mind if I ask you…”

He grunted, “What are my choices?”

I smiled.
